Shirley Marie Hodges Peters, 91, of Moultrie, died at Colquitt Regional Medical Center on Tuesday, May 13, 2025.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 21, 2025, in the chapel of Baker Funeral Home with Reverend Jason Edwards officiating. Interment will follow at Westview Cemetery. Brandon Peters, Spencer Peters, Josh Peters, Will Peters, Andrew Johnson, and John C. Peters, Sr., will all serve as pallbearers.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service in the chapel of Baker Funeral Home.
Born on March 13, 1934, in Moultrie, Georgia, she was the daughter of the late Edgar Eugene Hodges, Jr. and Jeanette Groover Hodges. Shirley earned her bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Georgia and spent many years as a school teacher, touching the lives of countless students with her kindness, patience, and passion for learning. Ms. Peters was a proud Chi Omega at the University of Georgia and a true pillar of Southern hospitality. Known for her gracious spirit and warm heart, she loved to entertain and brought people together with effortless charm. A passionate supporter of UGA football, she cheered on the Dawgs with unwavering pride.
Beyond her career, Shirley’s greatest joy was her family. She was a loving and nurturing presence in the lives of her children and grandchildren, always offering guidance, support, and unconditional love. Her home was filled with warmth, laughter, and the spirit of togetherness.
A devoted Christian, Shirley lived her life serving others, guided by her strong faith and generous heart. Her presence was a source of comfort and inspiration to all who knew her.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, James Douglas “Jim” Peters; and sister and brother-in-law, Janet Hodges Tucker and Jess Tucker.
She is survived by her sons, James Douglas “Doug” Peters, Jr. and wife Wendy of Dalton and Daniel Hodges Peters and wife Susanne of McDonough; grandchildren, Brandon Peters and wife Nicki, Spencer Peters and wife Taylor, Ashleigh Peters Johnson and husband Andrew, Josh Peters, Will Peters and wife Hannah, Ashton Peters; great-grandchildren, Hudson Peters, Caden Peters, and Sophia Grace Peters; brother, Edgar Eugene “Gene” Hodges, III of Lakeland, Florida; and nieces and nephews, Michael Tucker, Elizabeth Prokuski Tucker, Robert Tucker and wife Anna, and Janet Rebecca “J.R.” Melton.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Baker Funeral Home & Crematory.
