Rex Wallace Garner

Rex Wallace Garner, 88, of Moultrie, Georgia, died at his home on March 18, 2026.

Funeral services will be held in the Chapel of Baker Funeral Home on Sunday, March 22, 2026, at 2:00 pm with Jesse L. Vaughn, Esquire, officiating. A private interment will follow at Funston City Cemetery. J. Hamilton Garner, Robert Garner, William Garner, Brian McDaniel, Brandon Rye, and Stuart Richardson will serve as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends one hour before the service at Baker Funeral Home.

Born in Mississippi County, Missouri, to Charles Thomas and Zella Mae Faire Garner, he was the oldest of seven children. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Bruce Garner, Donald Garner, and Gene Garner.

Rex loved American History, was a wordsmith of the English language, and taught high school after graduating from Southeast Missouri State College. He felt called to preach and attended Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, where he met Glenda, whom he called the sweetest, gentlest person he had ever met. While both working and serving as an interim preacher, he fulfilled the childhood dream of becoming a lawyer. After graduating from Atlanta Law School, he continued to interim preach, and practiced law for over 40 years in Calhoun and Rome.

A lifelong learner, Rex loved reading the Bible, studying its various commentaries, reading and sharing American history, and visiting places of historical significance. He was never too busy to lend an ear, analyze a situation, or provide earnest counsel. He eagerly grilled hamburgers for friends and instilled the importance of quality family time around the dinner table.

Survivors include his wife, Glenda Hamilton Garner; son, J. Hamilton Garner (Beth) of Moultrie; daughter, Kathleen Zdrill (Jason) of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada; grandchildren William Garner, Robert Garner, Nalley Zdrill, and Lawson Zdrill; sister, Carolyn Sue Sterling (Jimmy) of East Prairie, MO; brothers, Charles Garner of Morely, MO; and Joe Garner (Judy) of East Prairie, MO; plus several nieces and nephews.

The family graciously thanks Irma Howard, Tiffany Staley, Nikki Kincade, Sharon Howard, and the staff of Colquitt Regional Hospice and Home Care for their time, compassion, laughter, and love.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Moultrie-Colquitt County Library (Moultrie, GA), the Mitchell Memorial Library (East Prairie, MO), or a youth literacy program.

Arrangements entrusted to Baker Funeral Home and Crematory.
