Lavada Ruth Spivey

Lavada Ruth Sellers Spivey, 85, of Doerun, passed away on Thursday, June 29, 2023, at her home.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM on Sunday, July 2, 2023, in the Chapel of Baker Funeral Home with Bro. Billy Wilkes and Bro. Larry Johnson officiating. Interment will follow at Kimball Church Cemetery in Anderson City, GA. Dr. Bryan Keith Burch, Chesley Neal Spivey, Joshua Brooks Posey, Kevin Douglas Pierce, Jr., Jason Lavaughn Boyette, James Andrew Buckner, Zachary Colt McKinnon, and Johnny Dalton McKinnon will serve as pallbearers. Ashton Pierce, Newton Sellers, Barry Spivey, Wesley Duckworth, and great-grandsons will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Born on February 18, 1938, in Colquitt County, GA, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Lewis Sellers, Sr., and Nora Salter Sellers. She worked as a seamstress at Tad’s/Doerun Sportswear and then later medically retired from Campbell’s Soup Company.
Lavada Ruth “Granny” Sellers Spivey lived a life of service to others. To Lavada, others included her enormous extended family, friends of friends, the community at large, and any strangers in need. To Lavada, service meant everything from pecan pies, biscuits, vegetables, cakes, and all things fried. She was known for the hand-picked, hard-worked fruits and vegetables that she would rally her family and gather, pick, pull, and harvest in order to keep her 4 deep freezers and pantry stocked to overflowing, all so she could cook for every wedding, funeral, birthday, anniversary, and family reunion in a 300-mile radius.
She was always the first to volunteer her time, love, gas, or labor to take care of or provide for anyone with a need. She loved to shuttle her family on any and all adventures from doctors’ appointments or gospel sings. Her favorite group was The Primitive Quartet who knew her personally as “their biscuit lady” for many years.
She always said that she wanted to have her visitation and celebration while she was alive, which she did have while she was on hospice, and she was going to preach her own funeral with the life and testimony she lived. In her short 85 years on this earth, she touched countless lives and WAISTLINES and the seeds of love and hope she planted will grow and thrive for generations yet to come.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Hansel Clester Spivey, Sr.; son, H.C. Spivey; grandchildren, Montgomery Ethan McKinnon (Monkey, Bam-Bam), and Cory Daniel Pierce; great-grandchildren, Jaydee Vann Furney and Michael Andrew Dukate; and siblings, Novella Lydia Sellers Spivey, Ethelene Euletha Sellers Walker, Joseph Lewis (J.L) Sellers, Jr., Ernest Newton Sellers, Nettie Mae Sellers Lamb Ponder, Daniel Seaborn Sellers, and Little Bobby Sellers.
Mrs. Spivey is survived by children, Nora Ruth Burch, Barbara Ann Posey (Tommy), Bertha Mae Pierce (Kevin, Sr.), Carol Lanette Jackson (Brett), and Melissa Faye Spivey; grandchildren, Chesley Neal Spivey, Audrey Elaine Spivey Reed (Kevin), Dr. Bryan Keith Burch (Lynda), Pamela Hope Burch, Joshua Brooks Posey (Jessica), Jason Lavaughn Boyette, Leslie Anne Dukate, Rebecca Diane Pierce Fulgham (Jason), Kevin Douglas Pierce, Jr. (Chelsea), Maegan Denee Pierce, Amanda Leanne Buckner Brack (Jason), James Andrew Buckner (Jennifer), Keri Alisabeth Buckner Sawyer (Damon), Zachary Colt McKinnon (Laney), and Johnny Dalton McKinnon; 36 great-grandchildren; and a great-great grandson, Michael Westyn Mancil, and countless others that called her "Granny".
Visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 PM on Saturday, July 1, 2023, in the chapel of Baker Funeral Home.
Several churches and friends will furnish food for the family on Sunday after the funeral at the Doerun Community Center around 5 p.m.
The family would like to recognize Colquitt Regional Hospice for their exceptional service and care for "Granny".
