Jose "Joe" Francisco Abreu

Jose “Joe” Francisco Abreu, 80, of Moultrie, crossed over on Sunday, July 5, 2026, at his home.

A Requiem Mass for Mr. Jose Francisco "Joe" Abreu will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 11, at St. Mark's Anglican Church, with Fr. Jay Thomas and Fr. Will McQueen officiating. Family and friends are invited to gather in thanksgiving for Joe's life, to commend him to God's eternal care, and to celebrate the hope of the Resurrection through Jesus Christ.

The family will receive friends and family immediately following the service in the Parish Hall at St. Mark’s.

Born on October 18, 1945, in Porto, Portugal, he was the son of the late Antonio Matos Abreu and Estefania Abrantes Abreu. Joe immigrated to the United States in 1963. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War aboard the USS Forrestal (CVA-59), where he demonstrated the courage, dedication, and honor that would define the rest of his life.

Following his military service, Joe devoted his career to public service and facilities management. He possessed extensive experience in facility operations, serving as a government contractor responsible for managing all facilities at the Marine Corps Logistics Base in Albany, Georgia. He later served as the Operations and Facilities Officer at Naval Station Rota in Spain, where his leadership, professionalism, and commitment to excellence earned the respect of colleagues and those he served.

Joe's greatest foundation was his faith. He was a faithful member and the Facilities Sexton of St. Mark's Anglican Church, where he worshiped the Lord and enjoyed the fellowship of his church family. His Christian faith guided his life, inspiring him to serve others with humility, integrity, and compassion.

Joe will be remembered as a devoted servant of God, a proud Navy veteran, and a man whose life was marked by unwavering dedication to his country, his profession, his church, and those he loved. He always had a “true story” to share for everyone.

His quiet strength, generous spirit, exuberant joy and steadfast character leave a lasting legacy that will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.

He is survived by his beloved and devoted wife, Aleta Annette Singletary Abreu of Moultrie; son, Foy Hilton Shiver, Jr. and wife Heather of Gadsden, Alabama; daughters, Melissa Abreu and Justin Stewart of Atlanta and Kristy Shiver Gibbs and husband David of Tifton; grandchildren, Scarlett Shiver, Megan Gibbs, Bennett Gibbs and wife Abby, Keegan Blakey and Lola Blakey; great-grandson, Murray Gibbs; and sister, Maria Julia Abreu of Real, Portugal.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Colquitt Regional Hospice 415 Rowland Drive, Moultrie, Georgia 31768.

Arrangements entrusted to Baker Funeral Home and Crematory.
