Jan Murphy Barrow, a devoted mother, grandmother, great grandmother and a life long educator, passed away on December 29th, 2023, at Colquitt Regional Medical Center, surrounded by family and friends. Her legacy of love and learning will contest to inspire those whose lives she touched.
Throughout her life, Jan was devoted to the field of education. Her commitment to education extended beyond the classroom, as she worked with educators by presenting invocative teaching ideas locally, state, national, and international as well as with RESA (Regional Educator Service Agency). She also worked with Moultrie Technical School and Southern Regional Technical College as an adult education instructor. Her work continued as a tutor for afterschool programs. After retirement she worked with SWGA Community Action Council where she was an educational specialist and director of the Moultrie YMCA mentoring program.
Jan was a compassionate and active member of her community and church. She was very involved in Relay for Life, the American Cancer Society, and the MOST group. The red cross was another organization that was dear to her. She was a dedicated member of First Baptist Church until her health kept her from participating. Over the course of many years, she taught Sunday school, worked in the nursery, and accepted many responsibilities in mission work and special events.
She is survived by her brother Vayden (Sonny) Murphy and wife Margaret, her son Ed Barrow, and her cherished granddaughter Lea Parrish and husband Dawson and great granddaughter Lorelei and great grandson Drake to be born in April and also survived by cousins and other family members.
Preceding her in death were her parents Vayden and Jean Murphy and sister Kay.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, January 6, 2023, at 11am, in the chapel of Baker Funeral Home with Pastor Julian Griner officiating. The family will receive friends and family immediately following the service. Her wishes were to have her body donated to science.
In lieu of flowers, the family would like donations made to the MOST group, American Cancer Society or any other local charitable associations.
