Ivis Gail Herring Stokes, 88, of Norman Park, died Friday, May 31, 2024, in Cairo, Georgia, at the home of her daughter.

Graveside services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 1, 2024, at Southside Baptist Church Cemetery, with Reverend Timothy VanLandingham officiating.

The family will receive friends immediately after the graveside service.

Born on January 7, 1936, in Houston County, Alabama, Mrs. Stokes was the daughter of the late James Byrl Herring and Willie Mae Martin Herring. Throughout her life, Ivis dedicated herself to education, beginning her career at Norman Park School, where she served as a substitute teacher, a library assistant, and a paraprofessional at Norman Park Elementary School. She was a proud graduate of Gordon High School and completed two years of study at Baptist Bible Institute in Graceville, FL. Ivis was more than just an educator - she was a preacher's wife known for her unwavering support and kindness. She was a pillar of strength and love, spreading joy and warmth wherever she went. Her impact on the lives of those around her was immeasurable, and her memory will be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing her. She was a member of Southside Baptist Church in Norman Park, Georgia.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving and devoted husband of 40 years, Rev. David A. Stokes, and her brother, James Martin Herring.

Mrs. Stokes is survived by her loving daughters, Brenda S. VanLandingham and husband Rev. Timothy of Cairo and Karen E. Stokes of Moultrie; grandchildren, David B. VanLandingham of Macon, Hannah G. VanLandingham of Cairo and Rebekah V. Mann and husband Laurence, III, of Louisiana; and niece, Wanda Herring Barfield.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Gideons International at Gideons.org or to your local Gideons Camp.


Arrangements have been entrusted to Baker Funeral Home.
