Gregory Byron Phelps, Sr.,66, of Moultrie, passed away on Sunday, May 7, 2023, in his home.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM on May 10, 2023, at Baker Funeral Home, with Rev. Josh Owen officiating. Interment will follow at Funston City Cemetery. Gregg Phelps, Jr., Jamie Phelps, Timmy Phelps, Sr., “Bear” Croft, Eric Croft, Nathan Phelps, and Hailey Phelps will all serve as pallbearers.
Born on October 26, 1956, in Moultrie, Georgia, he was the son of the late Claude Byron Phelps and Jane Miller Phelps Cobb. He was a machinist at Hubble Diecast and of the Christian faith.
Gregory Byron Phelps, Sr. had a lot of nicknames: “Big Gregg,” “Big Chief,” “Stretch,” and “Papa.” He was a big man- stood 6’ 11”, but was the biggest softie when it came to his family, especially his grandkids. He had a heart of gold and would give anyone the shirt off his back. He was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, searching for arrowheads, watching Georgia football, racing, and Atlanta Braves.
Gregg loved sharing stories and fellowshipping with anyone that he met. He never missed an opportunity to share his wisdom or help you with a life lesson. Papa enjoyed collecting various things but enjoyed telling you stories about how he acquired them even more.
Gregg was married to his sweetheart, Sonya, for 46 years. When speaking of their marriage, he would say, “We grew up together and raised one another while raising our boys.” He is now reunited, holding his sweetheart’s hand, in their heavenly home.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Sonya Montgomery Phelps; sister, Carol P. Keen; and grandson, Able Phelps.
Mr. Phelps is survived by his sons, Gregg Phelps, Jr. and wife Sarah of Deatsville, Alabama, Jamie Phelps and wife Sarah of Valdosta and Timmy Phelps of Moultrie; sister, Betty Lawrence of Moultrie; grandchildren, Timmy “Little T” Phelps Jr., Nathan Phelps, Hailey Phelps, Jacob Phelps, Noah Phelps, Hannah Phelps, and Samuel Phelps.
Visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 PM on Tuesday, May 9, 2023, in the chapel of Baker Funeral Home.
