Eugene Edwin Reid, Jr. (Gene) was born June 21, 1934, in Paynesville, Missouri to the late
Eugene Edwin Reid, Sr. and Laura Mae Henderson Reid. He attended Missouri State Teacher’s
College joined the U.S. Air Force and was stationed at Spence Field Air Force Base. There he
met his future wife and lifelong sweetheart, Gwen Greene Reid. They were married in August
1955 at New Elm Baptist Church. Gene served a two-year tour as an Aviation Cadet and
returned to Georgia to continue his studies at Georgia Tech. There he received his Bachelor of
Science Degree in Industrial Engineering in 1960. Over the next decade, Gene worked in the
mobile home manufacturing business, manufacturing and owning mobile home sales lots in
Georgia and Alabama. In 1969 Gene and Gwen returned to Moultrie to operate the Rest-A-
While Nursing Home, 5th Ave. They would later own that business, the Highlander Inn, as well
as other corporations.
While Gene and Gwen were busy raising three children (Teresa, Rob, and Chet), they were also
very active in the community. He assisted in coaching Little League baseball and Midget League
football. It was said by those who knew him, he helped purchase sports equipment for those
boys who couldn’t afford their own as he had come from very humble beginnings back in
Missouri.
Gene, Gwen, and their children were active members of Trinity Baptist Church where he enjoyed
regularly attending the Men’s Sunday school class before Sunday worship. In more recent years
they were members of the New Elm Baptist Church where they were married in 1955.
Gene was a leading Division Manager in the YMCA Building Fund and Membership drives for
the new YMCA location. He also served on the YMCA Board of Directors and was President for
2 years. He served on the Moultrie Planning and Zoning Commission and was a Kiwanis
member.
Gene was a loving husband and devoted family man who enjoyed being present in his
children’s activities as young athletes through their high school and college years. He was
known to sit on the top of the camper for a prime view at swim meets and his kids could
affectionately hear him cheering as his voice was resonating and easily recognizable.
Gene also participated as a soloist and Master of Ceremony for The Kiwanis Kapers and the
Follies. He could be spotted in the 1976 Bi-Centenial Parade in a true period costume with beard
to match. When Gene and Gwen decorated their old Victorian home for Christmas, they would
eagerly go into Santa and Mrs. Clause character for the children and families to visit and enjoy.
He had several hobbies over the years including singing and karaoke, golfing, wheeling and
dealing sales for used cars, reading historical novels, boating and boat collecting, fishing,
admiring antique cars, and traveling 49/50 states with his adoring and devoted wife in their
motorhomes. Gene Reid deeply loved his wife of 67 years, his three children, five grandchildren,
and four great grandchildren. He was a wonderful husband, daddy and papa whose confident
presence will be uniquely and forever missed by his family.

Mr. Reid is survived by his wife, Gwen Greene Reid of Moultrie; daughter, Teresa Gwen Reid of
Moultrie; sons, Eugene Edwin Reid III “Rob” and wife Stephanie of Homer, GA., and Chester
Alexander Reid “Chet” of Palmetto, FL.; grandchildren, Lauren Pulley (Daniel), Lindzi Lee
(Nathan), Win Reid (Emma Rae), Will Reid (Nicole), and Alexis Gassert (Jacob).
Great-grandchildren, Chelsea, Aria, Anders, Lucy, and baby boy Pulley; previously mentioned
nephews and nieces: Andrea Greene and Kit Greene.
