Dr. William Horace Chitty

Dr. William Horace Chitty, 88, of Moultrie, Georgia passed away on Sunday, September 6, 2026 surrounded by his family.

Visitation will be held at First Baptist Church Moultrie from 5:00-7:00 on Tuesday, September 8 and a celebration of life will be held Wednesday at 11:00 at First Baptist Church.

Born as the 5th generation on December 1, 1937 on the farm outside Moultrie, he was the son of Auburn Dewey Chitty and Ida Louise McMullen Chitty, who preceded him in death. He graduated from Moultrie High School in 1955, Valdosta State College with a BS in chemistry in 1959 and Emory University School of Dentistry in1963. He practiced dentistry for 45 years in Moultrie and as the dental director of Southwestern State Hospital in Thomasville, Ga. He proudly served in the United States Air Force as a Captain from 1963-1965 at McCoy AFB near Orlando, Fl.

He was raised learning an excellent work ethic on the farm and never left his roots. He loved to ride a tractor—planting a crop, clearing land, mowing or whatever he could find to do. At one time or the other he raised hogs, quarter horses and purebred Angus cattle. He thoroughly enjoyed planting a garden of fresh vegetables for many years.

He loved his church and was an active member of First Baptist for over 60 years. He served on various committees including building committees and search committees, Sunday School teacher and Chairman of the Deacons.

Dr. Chitty is survived by his wife of 68 years Mary Lynn Strickland Chitty, sons Brent Chitty (Stephanie) and Stacy Chitty (Kelli), daughter Celina Williams (Sebron), grandchildren Whitney Smith (Chad), Seth Chitty, Macie Kindler (Adam), Jessi Faust (Robbie), Madi Tye (Joel), Grace Nix (Austin), Caroline Morris (Mack), Cade Chitty and Calli Beth Chitty 13 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and brother Auburn P. Chitty (Alicia) of Boston, Ma.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the First Baptist Church building fund or charity of your choice.
