Randall Ray Benner was born on March 3, 1952 in Evansville, IN, the son of Melvin Eugene Benner and Joyce Korb Benner. Randy was best known for his servant’s heart and involvement in the Christian community. He lived out his personal motto: “Love God and Love People.”

Randy was heavily involved in scouting. He was an Eagle Scout, a Vigil Honor Scout in the Order of the Arrow, attended the Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimareon, NM, and attended the 1969 National Jamboree.

After high school, Randy attended Indiana University–Bloomington, where he joined Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity. He was later elected as an Archon, serving as a National Fraternity Officer on the Executive Council. In 1974, he graduated from IU with a B.A. in Biological Sciences and married Peggy Moss of Doerun, GA—his Alpha Chi Omega “Sweetheart”, who was an All-American diver at Indiana University. Randy’s love for his college fraternity never faded. He was a charter Board Member of the North Florida Alumni Association for Phi Kappa Psi and its first President. Since 2023, he served as Chapter Advisor for the Florida Alpha Chapter at Florida State University.

After graduating from Indiana University School of Dentistry, Randy and Peggy moved to Camilla, GA where he was very active in his church and community. He served as President of the Camilla Chamber of Commerce and was named the 1980 Camilla Citizen of the Year.

In 1985, Randy established his dental practice in Moultrie, GA where he continued his involvement in organized dentistry and served as Chairman of several state committees. He was Chairman of the Albany Junior College Advisory Board and served on the board of the Southwest Georgia Health System Agency. Dr. Benner was a Fellow in the Pierre Fauchard Academy and a Fellow and Master in the Academy of General Dentistry. After retiring from private practice in 2013, he joined the faculty of Albany State University as the Supervising Dentist for the Dental Hygiene Program for the next 8 years.

His influence will continue to impact several Christian organizations in which he was a dedicated leader. He served on the Board of Directors for the South Georgia Walk to Emmaus, and a Trustee for Camp Tygart, a United Methodist Camp. Randy was one of five men who founded Heritage Church which recently celebrated its 30th Anniversary. Today it is one of the largest churches in South Georgia. He was a charter Board Member of the Hope House Pregnancy Center and a charter Board of Directors member of Life Under the Son. He revitalized and cast a new vision for Crossroads Gospel Mission, serving as its President since 2015. In 2019, he was named Colquitt County Man of the Year.

Randy’s life was defined by faith, family, service, and joy. His greatest treasure was his family—he was proud to call Peggy his wife and was so excited about his two amazing daughters, Abby and Ashley. Everyone in Moultrie felt like they knew his four grandchildren—Meg, Griff, Avery, and Owen—because Randy would rave about them so often. His legacy will live on in the countless lives he touched. He is a great example of a life well lived.

Randy was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Sara Beth Craven, and her husband, Mike Craven, of Evansville, IN; his brother-in-law, Timothy Warfel, of Tallahassee, FL; and his sister-in-law, Wendy Warfield Moss, of Palm Harbour, FL.

He is survived by his loving wife, Peggy Moss Benner of 51 years; their two daughters, Abby Benner Rousseau of Spartanburg, SC and her children, Megan Bailey Rousseau and Griffin Brooks Rousseau; and Ashley Benner Mabe (Austen) of Suwanee, GA and their children, Avery Austin Mabe and Owen Tyler Mabe. He is also survived by his sisters, Susan Kay Atherton of Evansville, IN and Lisa Ann Grimm (Dan) of Evansville, IN; his brothers-in-law, Dr. Stephen Harding Moss of Clearwater, FL and Richard Lee Moss (Joanne) of Doerun, GA; his sister-in-law, Merry Lynne Warfel of Tallahassee, FL; 12 nieces and nephews; 24 great-nieces and great-nephews; and one special uncle, Bill Gilles of Evansville, IN.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Crossroads Gospel Mission, Heritage Church, or Life Under the Son.
