He retired from the University System of Georgia after many years of teaching at Valdosta State University, and he also shared his knowledge and passion for literature with students in South Carolina. One of Dr. Webb's greatest joys was working with his hands. A gifted woodworker and master craftsman, he found immense satisfaction in building homes that would shelter families and create lasting memories. Throughout his life, he built many homes, each one a testament to his skill, patience, and attention to detail. The home that meant the most to him, however, was the one he built for his own family. It was there that countless cherished memories were made, and it remained the place he loved most throughout his life. Surrounded by the home he had so carefully crafted and the family he treasured, it was also where he peacefully spent his final days. Beyond building homes, Dr. Webb enjoyed creating beautiful furniture and custom woodwork, filling his home with pieces made by his own hands.
After retirement, Dr. Webb found great joy in a simpler pace of life. He loved farming and gardening, spending countless hours tending the land he cherished. Whether nurturing a garden or working in the fields, he found peace and fulfillment in watching things grow. His appreciation for nature reflected the patience, dedication, and quiet strength that defined his life.
Dr. Webb will be remembered not only for his academic accomplishments but also for his kindness, wisdom, gentle spirit, and unwavering love for his family. To his grandchildren, he was simply "Poppy," a name that reflected the warmth, affection, and special bond they shared with him. His legacy lives on through the lives of his family, friends, former students, and all who were blessed to know him.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Ann Avera Webb.
Dr. Webb is survived by his wife, Joy Avery Webb of Moultrie; children, Russell York Webb and wife Catalina of San Jose California and their children, Sophie and Kenton, Allen Bradford “Brad” Webb and spouse Kim Reid of Richmond, Indiana, Ada Wynn Owens and husband Graham of St. Simons, Georgia, their children, Arthur, Ansel, and Asa, Nolan Thomas Wynn and wife, Leah of Atlanta, Georgia and their children, Sterling and Elora; 5 granddogs, 6 grandcats, and 2 cows: Precious and Dorothy.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Baker Funeral Home & Crematory.
