Born on June 18, 1957, in Moultrie, Georgia, he was the son of the late James D. Phillips, Sr. and Mary Aldridge Hampton. A lifelong racing fanatic, he rarely missed a race and loved the thrill, energy, and camaraderie that came with the sport. He was a steady presence throughout life—gentle, loyal, and unwavering in his love for his wife and children. When his children were young, he was on every sideline and at every field, coaching them with encouragement, pride, and a genuine joy that never faded. Those early years set the tone for the relationship he carried with them into adulthood: involved, supportive, and always present.
Charlie was also a master griller whose skill around the barbecue pit was legendary. Friends and family looked forward to his cookouts where his mouthwatering BBQ brought everyone together. Cooking was his way of showing love.
He was a devoted member of First Baptist Church Moultrie, where he enjoyed fellowship and built strong, meaningful connections within his church family. His faith was a firm foundation throughout his life.
Above all else, Charlie’s greatest source of pride was his bride of forty-seven years, Joy Stripling Phillips. Becoming a grandfather was one of the greatest gifts of his life. To his grandchildren, he wasn’t just a grandfather—he was Pop and Papa: the one who showed up, who listened, who made them feel safe and loved, and who celebrated every milestone with a full heart.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Joy Elizabeth Stripling Phillips of Moultrie; sons, Dustin Phillips and wife Lori, Will Phillips and wife Lisa, all of Moultrie and Daniel Phillips and wife Alexandra of Canton; grandchildren, Kendell Spencer, Grayson Phillips, Hayden Phillips, Graylynne Phillips, and Arden Phillips; stepfather, Bobby Hampton, Sr. of Norman Park; brothers and sisters, James Phillips and wife Cindy of Moultrie, Bobby Hampton, Jr. and wife Susan of Camilla, Patsy Jenkins of Moultrie, Frances Phillips of Norman Park, Dianne Flowers and husband Davy of Guyton, and Charlotte Guy and husband Jesse of Ohclocknee; and sisters and brothers in law, Regina and Marty Dismuke and their family, and Karen and Tommy Sanderson and their family; and several other nieces and nephews.
