Betty J. Jay,88, of Omega, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 26, 2021 at her home surrounded by family.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM on Saturday, May 29, 2021 in the Chapel of Baker Funeral Home with Rev. Lennon Howell and Rev. Alan Tillman officiating. Interment will follow at Leila Church Cemetery in Omega, GA. Will Jay, A.J. Finney, David Gibbs, Eric Gibbs, Billy Jay, Blaine Stamps, Jadon Stamps, and Ethan Stanberry will serve as pallbearers.
Born on May 21, 1933 in Omega, she was the daughter of the late Fred Luster Lackey and Ethel Etheridge Lackey. Betty was a graduate of Norman Park High School and College of Business in Macon, GA. In January of 1955, she married her neighbor and best friend W.C. “Sweet Pete” Jay. She retired from Piggly Wiggly Southern after 40 years of service.
As a child, Betty attended Antioch Baptist Church where she gave her heart to Christ at 11 years old. She later joined New Hope Baptist Church in Omega with her husband, where they raised their family. She was an active and dedicated servant of the Lord. Serving in many different positions. Betty was a faithful wife, loving mother, generous grandmother, and devoted friend. She enjoyed cooking, puzzles, reading, and time with friends and family, especially grandchildren. She also enjoyed listening to gospel music, playing and loving on her “fur babies”. She was an inspiration to others.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 34 years, W.C. “Pete” Jay, Jr.; sisters, Tot Lackey, Kathryn Baker, and Ruby Gay; and brother, Jr Lackey.
Mrs. Jay is survived by her son, Tony Jay and wife Donna of Jacksonville; daughter, Ann Trumbull of Baconton; grandchildren, Billy Jay of Albany, Amie Stanberry and husband Danny of Jacksonville, Kim Finney and husband Todd of Albany, Joey Trumbull and wife Hope, Jeffrey Trumbull of Baconton and Lauren Trumbull; 9 great grandchildren; brother, Tommy Lackey and wife Lavania; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members.
Visitation will be from 2-3 on Saturday, May 29, 2021 in the Chapel of Baker Funeral Home.
